AccessCIU-SSM Alumni Highlights
Jason Ricks graduated in 2008 after earning his Master of Arts, General Theological Studies. The Ricks family joined SIM after graduation and served by teaching Bible and theology courses at Maranatha University College in Ghana, Africa. Last year they re-located to Tega Cay, South Carolina in order to serve with SIM-Sports Friends. Jason is working on the development and writing of training resources. The Ricks ask for prayer, that God would continue to use the universal language of sports to break down barriers which often keep people from hearing of the love of Christ.

National ACCESS Award Received By Columbia International University In Two Catagories: Online and Hybrid
The Distance Education and Media Development department of Columbia International University (CIU) has been awarded the national ACCESS recognition for the 2011 Course-of-the-Year in the following two categories: ‘Online’ characterized by students working online at the same pace, interacting in discussion forums and ‘Hybrid’ which blends face-to-face teaching and learning with online technologies. The newly developed online course
MIN 5300 "Foundations of Spiritual Formation" was masterfully designed to cultivate formative student interaction by faculty member Dr. Shirl Schiffman
. This online course was augmented by the video production of Ken Summerall, Production Manager for Media Development. MIN 5300 was commended for its excellent forum interaction, video quality, webinars, “strong social presence” and “interactive credibility.” The second CIU course recognized was a hybrid course designed and taught by Dr. Daniel Janosik. THE 3720 "Apologetics"
was recognized for its scope of content and for the “motivational format of instruction” as well as the “combination of media and appropriate hybrid teaching methods.”
The Course-of-the-Year Award, co-sponsored by ACCESS and Christianity Today International, are peer-reviewed assessments which award outstanding new courses developed over the past 12 months by member organizations. Judging is based on instructional design, media/materials development, and learner support. These awards were presented to Columbia International University at the 40th Annual ACCESS Conference hosted by Moody Bible Institute in Chicago on March 9, 2011. This award was received by CIU representatives Rob McDole, Director of Distance Education and Media Development at CIU; Dr. Daniel Janosik, Online Instructional Designer and Adjunct Faculty for Apologetics; and Dr. Ron Kroll
, Director of the Doctor of Education Program.
ACCESS, the Association for Christian distance education, is a member organization made up of institutions of higher education, organizations that provide church-based and para-church training, and individuals involved in Christian distance education. Institutional members include seminaries and colleges with distance education programs, colleges and programs that focus on adult learners, distance education institutions, and other agencies that provide curriculum or support for leadership development and lay training.

Faculty Focus: Dr. Mike Barnett
Dr. Mike Barnett
is the Associate Dean of the College of Intercultural Studies, teaching courses on church planting movements, leadership and teams, creative access (business and missions), and the history of global Christianity. He and his wife, Cindy, enjoy spending time with seminary and university students. They are active members of Hill of the Lord University Church in Columbia. They enjoy gardening, snow skiing, hiking, mountain biking, sightseeing, fishing, and coffee drinking. God’s call on their lives is to equip the saints for being on mission with God among all peoples on earth!
Dr. Barnett recieved his Ph.D. in Church History from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Seminary. B.A. in Geography from the University of Houston.
He and Cindy served 12 years with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention working in the 10/40 Window. Previously, he served as a minister of missions and church planter in North America. He has a business background and continues to work in international business development.
